The state of Missouri with an area of 69,709 square miles is the 21st most extensive. With a population of 6,063,589 as it was estimated at 2014, Missouri is 18th most populous. The landmarks of the state represent: “Liberty Memorial”, “City Museum Harry S. Truman National Historic Site” and “Silver Dollar City”.
The largest university in the state is the “University of Missouri” in Columbia. Other colleges are: the “University of Missouri – Kansas City”, the “University of Missouri – St. Louis” and the “Missouri University of Science and Technology”.
The total state product in Missouri, estimated in 2006 was $225.9 billion, and per capita income was $32,705, ranking 26th in the nation. Major industries in the state of Missouri represent aerospace, transportation equipment, food processing, chemicals, electric equipment, light manufacturing, etc. Agriculture is also a very important sector in the state. Most common products of agriculture are: beef, soybeans, pork, dairy products, hay, corn, poultry, sorghum, cotton, rice and eggs. Missouri is ranked on the 6th position in the production of hogs and on the 7th position for production of cattle. Also, the state is in the top five states in the nation for production of soybeans. The wine industry in the state is also rapidly growing. Missouri is the only state in the United States to have two Federal Reserve Banks, one in Kansas and one in St. Louis. The state has a growing science and biotechnology field. Missouri’s sales tax rate for most of the items is 4.225% with some additional levies.
In the energy sector, back in 2011, 82% of Missouri’s electricity was generated by coal, 10% was generated from the state’s only nuclear power plant, 5% was generated by natural gas and 1% was generated by hydroelectric sources.
